The Three Academies

The Undergraduate Academies are collaborative ventures which benefit from the wisdom and inquisitiveness of all members of the university community. The Academies are open to all University at Buffalo undergraduate students. Students may participate by registering for an academy sponsored seminar, residing in an academy residential community, or by participating in a variety of workshops, excursions, and community building events. As a student, you can get involved in a lot of what we do or just sample a little.

These tailored programs allow students to infuse the academy spirit into their undergraduate experience. Many students find that the experience shapes their thinking about their undergraduate program, choice of internship opportunities, or even career paths. Students report that the academies help them to:

  • Foster closer relationships with faculty, staff, and students
  • Enhance their involvement in university life
  • Develop a meaningful connection between academic concepts and out-of-class activities
  • Enhance their personal and intellectual growth
  • Network and develop valuable career and graduate school references

University faculty and staff are also actively encouraged to participate in the community. Academy advisory council members formally guide the development of the academy, vision, courses, and supporting experiences. However, all members of the community are welcomed at academy events, are encouraged to recommend or volunteer to lead theme-related activities, or simply, to stop by the Academies Learning Lab in 17 Norton Hall to visit with students and colleagues working in the various theme areas.

Join the Undergraduate Academies

The Academies have a physical community represented by our residential area in the Ellicott Complex on the university’s north campus and by our office and Learning Lab in 17 Norton Hall. The Undergraduate Academies residential community offers the opportunity to live among other students with similar interests. Students residing in the Academies Residential Community attend activities, events, and workshops specifically designed for their academy of interest.

We also have an active virtual community—an on-line social network—which provides a forum for discussion and a window into community activities. All academy participants are encouraged to check in regularly for new events, register for activities, and share their thoughts. If you are new to the academies or to this network and need help, please contact the academies office for assistance.

Students interested in the academies seminars or residential community must complete an application. Enrollment periods vary by semester. Interested students should contact the Undergraduate Academies office for assistance.
